Nothing says ‘self-care’ like popping on a face mask, brewing a cup of tea and taking a moment to relax. However, incorporating a face mask into your weekly skincare routine can do more than make you feel good. The right face mask can make a huge difference in your skin, helping to soothe, hydrate and brighten it!
With hundreds of different face masks on the market (not to mention all the DIY versions), it can be tough to know what masks actually work. The secret is in choosing the right face mask for your specific skin type.
Choosing the best face mask for your skin type
Although everyone’s skin texture and needs are unique, the majority fall under the three main skin type categories; dry, oily and combination. You may also have acne-prone skin or sensitive skin as well as a dry or oily skin type. Not all face masks work for every skin type so we’ve recommended the right mask and the ingredients to look for each individual type.
1. Acne-prone
If your skin is acne-prone, you are likely prone to blemishes and clogged pores. A clay mask is ideal for those looking to detoxify and deep cleanse their skin, without compromising hydration. If you use a face mask which is too harsh and strips hydration, you may end up with irritated skin and your breakouts can worsen.
When choosing your face mask, look for one which is anti-inflammatory while also full of active and antibacterial ingredients to help fight acne. These ingredients can include chemical exfoliants (such as AHAs and BHAs) as well as natural exfoliants like french green clay and papaya enzymes.
2. Dry
Dry skin is caused by a range of different factors, from dehydration, genetics to environmental reasons. If your skin is feeling tight and flaky, the best face mask is a hydrating face mask packed with nourishing vitamins such as Vitamin A and C.
A key ingredient to look for in face masks for dry skin is Niacinamide. A type of B3, Niacinamide helps to retain moisture in your skin’s lipid barrier and minimise the appearance of pores.
3. Oily
Much like acne-prone skin, those with oily skin need a face mask which can help regulate oil levels without compromising hydration. Exfoliating your skin will prevent your pores from becoming clogged by excessive sebum (the skin’s naturally occurring oil). Choose a clay mask which has natural ingredients such as willow bark extract to keep your pores clean and prevent blackheads and breakouts.
4. Combination
Combination skin has the properties of both dry and oily skin. Usually, your skin may be more oily on the T-Zone and your cheeks may be a little more dry. Because of your skin’s varying needs, it’s best to apply your mask in targeted areas opposed to over your entire face. For example, if your cheeks and nose are feeling particularly dry then apply a hydrating mask to these areas. You can then tackle any oily areas such as your forehead with a clay mask.
5. Sensitive
Sensitive skin can be tough to care for and choosing the wrong face mask could lead to your skin breaking out and becoming rashy, itchy and inflamed. The best face mask for sensitive skin is a hydrating sheet mask which will soothe your skin while also boosting hydration. A sheet mask is ideal as you can easily pop it in the fridge prior to application to enhance the cooling effect.
When selecting your face mask, look for a fragrance-free formula. You should also have a read of the ingredients, natural soothing ingredients such as camomile, jojoba, and aloe vera are ideal. Vitamin E and Hyaluronic Acid are also good for sensitive skin.
